This position reports to the Vice President – Deputy General Counsel and is within the Litigation organization of the Legal Department. The successful candidate will have direct responsibilities relating to some of all of the following: general commercial litigation, including land use, right of way and property law, tort claims, employment litigation and environmental litigation. Specifically, the successful candidate can expect to perform the principal duties and responsibilities listed below.
Work with internal stakeholders to evaluate potential claims and advise on risk associated;
Analyze company policies and practices to identify areas of risk and develop risk mitigation strategies;
Provide strong support on all aspects of litigation;
Provide support on active internal investigations and/or employment related demands, charges and/or litigation;
Manage outside counsel on active and/or potential litigation, including budgeting and cost containment;
In coordination with other attorneys in the Legal Department, develop and implement litigation strategy on assigned cases;
Provide legal and litigation support on issues, claims or lawsuits involving general commercial law, contract law, environmental issues, property law, regulatory and/or tax matters and other legal matters that result in litigation risk to the Company;
Work collaboratively and creatively with various business units in identifying, assessing and mitigating risk;
As required, manage relationships and matters with legal vendors.
Bachelor’s and Juris Doctor degrees from an accredited institution(s);
Admitted to, or qualified for admission to, at least one State Bar;
8-10 year’s overall experience;
Generally 5 – 10 years of experience as a practicing attorney (judicial clerkships will count as practice years), with a minimum of 5 years of experience handling complex litigation.
Significant experience with commercial, environmental and/or employment litigation;
Prior experience working in an in-house corporate legal department;
Curiosity and passion for continuous improvement;
Detail-oriented with strong work ethic, acts with urgency;
Able to manage numerous projects simultaneously under deadline pressure;
Demonstrated experience providing quick, practical and solution-oriented counsel to business stakeholders of all levels. Client service mindset;
High emotional intelligence and business acumen, proven ability to think strategically and creatively to solve challenging, complex problems;
Team-player, ability to flourish in both collaborative and independent work environments;
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
