Job Summary

Responsible for selling services and growing revenue by providing technical customer support to assigned or new business accounts including the largest accounts held by CenturyLink. The Sales Engineer builds strong relationships with customer/prospects technical contacts at all levels in order to execute the sales strategy by developing solutions that are fit for purpose and supportable by CenturyLink. The SE qualifies technical aspects of sales opportunities, resolves technical issues arising during the sales engagement, helps clients define specifications and requirements, develops solutions and provides technology presentations to both technical and management-level audiences, up to and including C-suite.

Job Description

Customer Meetings: attends customer meetings, up to and including C-suite level, in person and via the phone. Prepares technical proposals and presentations. Provides responses to product specific and general industry questions. Demonstrates selling abilities and effective pro-active customer communications.

Customer Solution Development: analyzes customers business needs and develops strategies based on knowledge of customer’s current communication network, equipment and business. Is able to independently complete standard, complex and customised customer designs.

Bid Support: provide technical responses in RFI/RFP documents and offer advice/guidance in other areas of the tender.

Internal and External Training: advises customers and sales on technical aspects of company products including fit to customer’s needs, features and availability.

Customer Advocate: acts as customer advocate as necessary for pre-sales activities.


Communication: excellent and recognised written, verbal and presentation skills. Must be able to develop relationships and communicate with customer technical, commercial leadership staff. Has a deep understanding of industry terminology and language and applies this appropriately depending on the audience. Ability to listen actively and to question in order to reveal underlying information.

Technical Skills: Excellent and recognised understanding of communications technology and network design sufficient to complete large and complex customer solutions without assistance. Excellent and recognised understanding of technical terminology related to company products and services. Excellent and recognised understanding of sales cycles and the solution selling process.

Problem Solving: ability to prioritise and solve complex issues in a timely manner.

Work Style: Ability to work independently and as part of a team and under pressure with tight deadlines. Ability to work on multiple complex projects simultaneously. Must be detail oriented. Ability to build internal/external relationships. Proven awareness & sensitivity to the differing needs and styles of customers.

Business Acumen: Must have a thorough understanding of company financial measures. Must have a thorough understanding of telecommunications industry and sales cycles.

Ability to travel as needed (Approx. 20%)
