The Senior Operations Engineer – UNX is a technical expert working as part of the Global Hosting Compute Operations team.
Provide world class support to an enterprise level client base responsible for incident resolution, processing of change requests, and contributions to problem management for UNIX and Linux platform cases, as well as VMware ESX. The candidate will have a proven track record of UNIX, Linux system administration and VMware ESX ideally with professional qualifications such as RHCE, SCSA or VCP
Be the last point of escalation of UNIX / LINUX and VMware ESX related issues
Ability to take the lead in dealing with high priority case or escalation and manage client facing technical calls. Owning a driving incidents whilst providing constant updates until service restoration (end to end)
Mentoring other junior team member / newly join as required
Ensuring the client and ticket is up to date at all times on incident progress.
Maintain, troubleshoot and co-ordinate replacement of faulty hardware.
Involved in the planning and execution of Client Change Requests in a timely manner.
Escalation of critical issues/outages to Hosting Compute Management as per procedures.
Provide detailed feedback to other groups on all incident resolutions, ensuring full details are entered into ticket case notes.
Daily review and action of open cases; updating Hosting Manager on current cases and their status as appropriate.
To provide comprehensive handovers to peers at the end of shift.
Attend Daily Operations and Change Review Meetings as required.
Logging cases to 3 rd party vendors requesting assistance on unresolved issues.
Detailed working knowledge of UNIX (Solaris System), Linux (Redhat), and VMware ESX
Administration & comprehensive experience of configuring HP servers and preferrably experience with Blade technology/Cisco UCS
Veritas volume manager experience essential, along with working knowledge of Veritas and Sun clustering products.
Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills essential
Excellent troubleshooting and configuration experience of internet protocols which include and not limited to HTTP, TCP/IP, SSH, SFTP, FTP, DNS, DHCP
Knowledgeable in Linux Volume Manager (LVM), EXT3, VMFS
Knowledgeable in storage solutions including Linux and Veritas Multipathing
Knowledgeable in web server technologies such as SSL, load balancer
Knowledgeable in Clustering: Red Hat, VCS, Oracle RAC
Knowledgeable in LDAP, TACACS+, RADIUS
Knowledgeable in Backup solutions – and in particular, Veritas
Understanding of Active Directory
Knowledgeable in file systems including NFS, GFS2, OCFS2, ZFS
Script writing experience, .e.g: Shell scripting, Perl
ITIL Certification desired
Pro-active team player
Positive and adaptable attitude – able to perform all Operations Center job function as required
Education or Equivalent Experience:
A degree in IT, UNIX professional qualifications or equivalent proven experience in a technical support role.
At least 8 years of experience in this technology space
Having good networking concept which include static route, Firewall, VPN, load balancing
Working knowledge of Server monitoring
Possess analytical troubleshooting skills combined with excellent written and verbal communication skills
Be organized and be able to work under pressure
Be motivated and possess a ‘can do’ attitude
Proactive and energetic nature
Live within commutable distance of primary office location
Operations Centre processes and procedures are adhered to at all times.
Escalations are performed within the SLA timescales.
Good communications with clients provided throughout incident lifecycle.
Engineering and Senior Management are kept abreast of appropriate escalations.
Client satisfaction surveys produce positive responses.
Peer level KPI’s are within normal levels.
